MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Five provinces in northern Luzon are under public storm warning signals as tropical storm Gener (international codename Saola) moves closer to the area Sunday, July 29.

Weather bureau Pagasa, in its 11 am bulletin, reported Gener to be 310 kilometers east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km per hour near the center and gusts of up to 100 kph.

The storm, which intensified slightly since the last Pagasa bulletin Saturday evening, is moving in a north northwest direction at a slower pace, at 11 kph.

Public storm warning signal number 2 has been hoisted over Cagayan, including the Calayan and Babuyan islands.

Meanwhile, signal number 1 has been raised over Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, and Batanes.

Within the 600 km radius of the tropical storm, rainfall is heavy to intense, at around 10-25 millimeters per hour, according to the weather bureau.

Gener is forecast to come close – but not make landfall – near the tip of northeast Luzon. It is forecast to be 260 km east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan by Monday morning, and 160 km northeast of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday.

The bureau is warning residents near low lying and mountainous areas in places with storm warning signals to be prepared against possible landslides and flashfloods.

Coastal communities in these areas area also alerted against big waves and storm surges.

In addition, the effects of the monsoon and the tropical storm will bring rough seas, and small seacraft are advised not to venture to sea.

The next bulletin on Gener will be out by 5 pm Sunday.

The storm will enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing rain over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, especially in the west.

The rest of Luzon and Visayas, meanwhile, will have cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms. Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain and thunderstorms.
