JM de Guzman on rehab, Jessy Mendiola, and second chances
The actor talks about his ordeal with drugs, but also says that he's grateful for another chance in the industry

MANILA, Philippines – A year after disappearing from the limelight, actor JM de Guzman admitted on television that he’s been in rehab for a drug problem.

In an interview with Boy Abunda aired on The Buzz, Sunday August 3, JM, known for the playing the title role in ABS-CBN’s Angelito: Ang Batang Ama said that he entered a rehabilitation facility with the help of his family.

According to JM, he was the one who sought help.

(Mentally, I could not think straight. I could not trust myself with decisions, the responsibility and discipline was gone. Emotionally I could not control it.)

The actor also said that the drug issue was one of the causes why he and actress Jessy Mendiola broke up. The two dated for 2 years.

Sa bisyo ko, sa mga ginawa ko sa sarili ko, wala pong kinalaman si Jessy doon. Decision ko ‘yun, choices ko ‘yun na ginawa ko naging rason ‘yun kung bakit kami naghiwalay,” he said.

(My vices, what I did with myself, Jessy had nothing to do with it. It was my decision, my choice, and that is one of the reasons why we broke up.)

Although he has yet to finish his session at the facility, JM said that he has learned a lot from the experience.

Na-appreciate ko ‘yung mga simpleng bagay na nabibigay sa akin, simpleng bagay na nilalatag sa akin ng Diyos. Kasi noon, wala akong kinikilalang kahinaan ko.

(I appreciate the simple things that have been given to me, the simple things that God has laid out for me. Before, I did not acknowledge my weaknesses.)

The actor also said that he is thankful for being given another chance in the industry despite his mistakes.

Nagpapasalamat ako ng sobra kasi hindi lahat ng tao nabibigyan ng ganitong pagkakataon at hindi lahat ng tao binibigyan pa ng pangalawang pagkakataon,” he said.

( I am so thankful because not every person is given the opportunity, and not everyone is given a second chance.)

Prior to becoming known for his role in Angelito, JM also played the role of the late Rico Yan in the remake of Mula Sa Puso.

He is set to return to television via a guest role on the show Ipaglaban Mo.– Rappler.com
