Paterno Esmaquel II received his baptism of fire at Probe Productions Inc, the independent production company behind the first investigative news magazine on Philippine television. In the 10-person group behind the weekly show Probe, Paterno learned to perform the duties of at least 5 people in a TV production team – researching, field producing, transcribing, writing, and video editing.

When Probe ended its 24-year run, he moved to GMA News Online, the official news website of broadcast giant GMA Network Inc. His job as a news producer required him to report with speed as well as perspective on a daily basis.

Paterno’s training now helps him shoot, write, edit, and tweet for Rappler as a multimedia reporter.

A 26-year-old journalist, Paterno graduated with a Communication degree from the Ateneo de Manila University. In college, he served as associate editor of the school newspaper The Guidon, and did his internship with the investigative news magazine Newsbreak.

Paterno, a former sacristan and catechist, loves to read books and watch shows about the Catholic faith and Jesuit spirituality. His interests also include Philippine culture and education. He sees himself doing only one thing aside from journalism: teaching.
