MANILA, Philippines – The question on the reality of climate change has already been resolved: it is here, it is happening, and we need to do something about it.
The Philippines, despite emitting less than one percent of the world’s total carbon emissions, is one of the countries tagged as most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This is why, as a country, our stakes on global efforts for climate change mitigation and adaptation are very high.
Now that President Duterte has formally appointed his cabinet officials, new questions emerge for our new set of leaders – particularly those from the energy, environment, and agriculture departments. How will we meet the target to reduce carbon emissions by 70% by 2030? What will be the government’s next steps on the issue of building more coal-fired power plants? How will farmers be empowered to push for climate-friendly practices without affecting food security?
There is a need for these new leaders to engage in dialogue with the public. This is the objective of the State of the Nature Assessment (SONA), an annual event organized by the Green Convergence for Safe Food, Healthy Environment and Sustainable Economy. This year, it will be held at the Silliman University in Dumaguete City on Tuesday, August 9.
In this “Green SONA,” leaders from civic environmental organizations will discuss the state of the Philippine environment and present recommendations to address related issues. Representatives from the government’s energy, environment, and agriculture departments will address related issues and provide concrete next steps.
