American Express celebrates its 100th year in PH
American Express is celebrating its centennial year in the country with a number of renewed benefits for their loyal cardmembers

MANILA, Philippines – Travel. Premium service. After years in the business, these are the words we have come to associate with American Express.

The company started off as a freight and valuables delivery service in 1850. The century following their inception was spent providing patrons with access to products, insights and experiences to enrich their lives and build business success. Now, American Express is the go-to global services company for travellers.

In 1891, they introduced the world’s first traveller’s cheque. In 1915, they officially entered the travel business by providing luxury steamship travel around the world. In 1958, they launched their first personal card, the American Express Card. And in 1984, they made waves as the first in the world to introduce their signature and highly coveted Platinum Card.®

In 1991, the Platinum Card was introduced to the Philippines where it continues to maintain its status as one of the most desired cards in the market.

These are just a few milestones in American Express’ long history of innovation and world-class customer service to premium customers.

“We have a lot of history that is founded on the tradition of customer service and integrity and trust,” says Y C Koh, Asia President for American Express International, Inc. “So in everything that we do, we innovate to make sure that we keep the customers in mind.”

This year, American Express is celebrating yet another milestone: Their 100th year in the Philippines. And to celebrate, American Express together with BDO, its local partner bank, hosted a gala dinner in the Forbes Ballroom at the Conrad Manila last October 8.

“The 100 years of American Express Gala is a grand celebration befitting the prestige and prominence that American Express is known for,” says Rolando C. Tanchanco, BDO Executive Vice President and Consumer Lending Group Head. “Conceptualized and organized specifically for American Express Cardmembers, this night is our way of giving back to them, as well as our partners, for their continued patronage throughout the years.”

American Express’ partnership with BDO began in 2007.

BDO is the exclusive card-issuing bank partner of American Express in the country. For BDO, the partnership reinforces their position as the issuer of the biggest name brands in the country. For American Express, the company can tap into the culture of travel that permeates the Philippines.

“We have partners all over the world, but we are very selective in choosing who we work with,” says Y C Koh. “For partners, the key thing for us is that we must share the same values. If you look at American Express, you’ll find our key values revolve around the customers. And those are the ones that are shared by BDO, so to us, it was a very good fit.”

To thank their loyal patrons, BDO and American Express have revitalized the iconic Platinum Card. Cardmembers, affluent seasoned travelers, and their families now have access to better travel experiences as well as a number of new rewards and benefits, such as a complimentary business class companion ticket when they fly with Philippine Airlines, privileged access to over 900 lounges across 120 countries, and complimentary Meet & Assist Services for departure and arrival at NAIA Terminals 1 and 3, as well as Davao and Clark International Airports.

“American Express’ aim is to be the world’s most respected service brand, and we look forward to working with BDO to deliver a world-class experience to our customers as we enter our second century,” says Y C Koh. — Rappler.com
