MANILA, Philippines – There is a misconception that a person is either a leader or a follower, nothing in between. But this isn’t necessarily true.

Through the years, you’ve probably observed that good followers are also brave, responsible, and willing to take the initiative — characteristics usually attributed to leaders and bosses. At the same time, leaders are usually effective if they know how to be part of the crowd: to listen to their team and follow the needs of the majority.

Every person, no matter how shy or unassuming, can be an effective leader. 

Not every leader is the same, though. If you’ve had more than one student council president, class beadle, or boss in your life, then you’ve already had a taste of some of different leadership styles.

There are stern bosses who say things like “don’t leave until you’ve finished everything” and friendlier ones who prefer a lighter, more casual, and democratic environment. Some put a premium on talent, while others think work ethic has more value.
