Why women in their 30s should invest in anti-aging now
Just because you don’t see the signs now doesn’t mean the wheels of skin aging haven’t started turning

MANILA, Philippines – Aging is a process all of us undergo, yet the way each of us deals with it varies. Some welcome aging readily, knowing full well that it’s simply a natural process and just make the most it, while the rest are a bit apprehensive in the face of it.

Why? Aging essentially means loss of one’s youth, and with it comes a slew of things they’re fearful of: contracting ailments, being unable to be as active as WE were in their youth, and fading looks. But in reality, what’s alarming is not aging per se—looking old is.

As we age, so does our skin. There will definitely come a day when our youthful vigor will begin to slowly fade. And nothing manifests this process more obviously than wrinkles, spots, and saggy skin.

An internal study conducted by L’Oreal Philippines among different Filipino women found that aging is among the top 5 bothersome skin problem and is a common concern among all age groups. But because of certain factors and situations our skin is subject to on a daily basis, this day just might come sooner than expected for many Filipinas.

The daily skin-related challenges of the modern Filipina

The modern Filipina is a hardworking go-getter. Nowadays, it isn’t difficult anymore to find a Filipina who hustles, multitasks, and gets the job done just as well, if not better than, their male counterparts.

But as she puts herself out there, both figuratively and literally, she often unwittingly subjects her skin to factors that trigger premature aging. Some of these you may already know like lack of sleep from pulling all-nighters and waking up early to make sure you arrive at work on time, stress, and smoking and drinking. As a result, signs of skin aging already appear as early as 30 years old: loss of elasticity, age spots, facial puffiness, fine lines, and wrinkles.

But there are those that you may have been unaware of or have severely underestimated. These include making repetitive facial expressions, not wearing sunblock before you head out for your daily commute, having a sugar- and carb-rich diet, not drinking enough water, and failing to start an anti-aging skin care routine as soon as you hit 30.

This is the reality we Filipinas we face everyday, and just because we don’t see physical signs of aging on our face just yet doesn’t mean it hasn’t started yet. Did you know that 90% of Filipinas are actually aging faster than they should because of these stressors?

Unfortunately, many women are spurred into action only after they notice wrinkles, spots, lines, dryness, and puffiness. But at this point it will already be too late, and trying to reverse the effects will be a challenge. On the other hand, there are those who did try but stopped at some point for one reason or another.

What you can do to combat premature skin aging

When it comes to skin aging, it’s better to be proactive than reactive. You might not see visible signs yet in your 20s and might feel like you’re too young to be using anti-aging skin products, but this is actually the best time for you to make a conscious effort to combat premature aging.

Review your lifestyle choices and see what can be fixed. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep. Wear sunblock every time you go out. Avoid smoking and drinking, eat healthy, and stay hydrated. Avoid scrubbing your skin too much when you clean it, and don’t skip the moisturizer.

Most importantly, start and maintain an anti-aging regimen for your skin as early as you can with products that are potent, backed by science, and effective to retain your youthful look even when you’re well over your prime. Be on the lookout for ones with active ingredients such as Pro-Retinol A and Adenosine, which fights wrinkles; Fibrelastyl, which makes skin firmer; Glycollis, a powerful exfoliating ingredient that smoothens fine lines; and vitamin C to brighten skin.
