Video as a creative platform is still underutilized in the Philippines. Smart wants to change that

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos are incredibly talented, but the world has yet to fully discover that fact.

Even at the dawn of the digital era, Filipinos are still not maximizing video as a platform to express themselves, mainly due to three things: unstable connections, lack of knowledge in video production, and an all-around apprehension to put themselves out there.

Smart, recognizing the infinite creative potential of the Filipino youth, is trying to change that.

Last Saturday, July 23, Smart kicked off the “Own It” campaign at The Atrium in SM Megamall. It’s a platform that encourages everyone, especially the youth, to share their passions with the world, giving them a voice larger than themselves.

Under this campaign, they unveiled the Smart Launchpad, a program that helps budding content creators upload their videos on YouTube and broadcast their talents to the world via Upload Stations all over the country.

These Launchpad Upload Stations can be found in selected malls in key areas nationwide. On weekends, Smart Subscribers can pay a visit to any one of these booths to hang out, collaborate, create their own videos, and upload them in real time using Smart’s fast Internet connection and a variety of Samsung devices.

“We understand that it may not always be easy for the young Filipino to express themselves on a digital platform,” says Katrina Luna-Abelarde, Head of Wireless Consumer Operations for Smart. “We want to address these barriers because we have seen many of the world’s digital generation get their start in content creation on the platform, showcasing their talent on video and sharing their talent with the widest audience available on the web. We want to encourage the Filipino youth to explore this alternative medium not only for self-expression, but also as a way to secure a career for their future.”

Famous YouTubers such as the Australian-accent-rocking Bogart the Explorer took the audience on a tour of the SM Megamall Upload Station, showing them how all of us have the potential to get in front of a camera and create.

Looking at the different sets, I felt a sense of ease knowing that everything I would need for an awesome video was just waiting for me and all I had to do was to get in there and start filming. Even though I have no idea how to play the guitar, I actually wanted to try it out for the video,” said Adi Amor, the blogger and brainchild behind the blog, www.itsadiamor.com, as she walked around the different booths. “I just felt like everything was possible in the Smart launchpad.”

Aspiring content creators will get a chance to participate in Launchpad Workshops where they can learn from the best of the best – from industry professionals to top YouTube sensations. Lessons will include how to turn your passion into a lucrative endeavor, how to build your brand, monetize your YouTube channel, and create engaging content plans.

At the end of these workshops, Smart will choose content creators to fly to Los Angeles, USA to collaborate with international YouTube stars.
