MANILA, Philippines – Filipino students topped an international math contest in Singapore, where 9-year-old Filbert Ephraim Wu emerged as the lone contestant to attain a perfect score.

Winning a total of 63 medals – 14 gold, 20 silver, and 29 bronze – the Philippines was first overall in the inaugural Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) held from August 14-17.

The Filipino contestants also won special awards and 11 honorable mentions, according to Archieval Rodriguez, president of the Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines (MathDAP).

Wu, a student of MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig, got a perfect score in the competition – the only one among 426 participants from Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
