PLDT SME Nation’s new batch of Filipino entrepreneurs
The 2015 awards recognize homegrown “Bossings” who have a digital mindset

MANILA, Philippines – It takes resilience, a lot of hard work and a mindset for innovation to turn a small to medium enterprise into a global one.

These are the key attributes that helped Carlos Chan turn a once cornstarch-repacking business (Liwayway Marketing Corp.) into a global snack manufacturing company (more popularly known as Oishi).

Now on its 5th year, the PLDT SME Nation Awards, honored Liwayway Marketing Corp. as the Grand MVP Bossing, leading a roster of other SMEs recognized for their Filipino entrepreneurial spirit, innovativeness and willingness to embrace technology to grow their business.

Not short on gratitude for winning the prestigious award, Chan expressed his thanks to the whole team that helped make his enterprise grow.

“I wish to share this award with my wife Priscilla and my children who equally deserve this for accepting the many challenges in growing the business.”

He also added, “I share this award with the employees of Liwayway whose dedication and trustworthiness, loyalty, and hard work contributed to the success of Liwayway.

The MVP Bossing Awards this year was chaired by PLDT Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, Eric Alberto, Sen. Bam Aquino, and past MVP Grand Bossing awardees Cecilio Pedro (2013) and Amb. Alfredo Yao (2014).

Along with Liwayway, several remarkable companies were also recognized for their entrepreneurial spirit and digital foresight.

They are: Johnny Chan of Bellevue Hotels and Resorts, Ricky Reyes of Gandang Ricky Reyes Salons, Julia Gandionco of Julie’s Bakeshop, Atty. Arthur Tugade of Perry’s Group,  Ferdie Marañon of Sagrex Corporation, Alice Eduardo of Sta. Elena Construction and Development Corporation, Laura Verallo De Bertotto of VMV Hypoallergenics, and Esther and Gaspar Vibal of Vibal Publishing Group.

This annual event is considered the biggest search for Filipino entrepreneurs who embody the spirit of perseverance and who have achieved success in their business by harnessing technology. It is aligned with PLDT SME Nation’s objective of promoting and recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit of the nation.

Eric R. Alberto, PLDT EVP and Head of Enterprise, International and Carrier Business, expounds that the goal is, “ to recognize, honor, and celebrate our very best examples of the Filipino Entrepreneur. We hope these awards will serve as a continuing inspiration towards more Filipino Bossings and drive many of our businessmen and women to adopt their winning ways and values, and innovative approaches to success like embracing technology.”

The awards follow a stringent selection process with over a hundred submissions during a 2-month nomination period. Each nominee was screened and judged based on innovativeness, values, creativity in using technology, and readiness for competition in the upcoming ASEAN Economic Integration.

Aside from the aforementioned awardees, a special award, the People Saving the Future Award, was given to international recording artist Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas for his work in helping aspiring young musicians and artists through the APL de Ap foundation.

Becoming role models for the country, the awardees will aid PLDT in promoting entrepreneurship in the Philippines. These success stories will be the inspiring benchmarks for the country’s other thriving SMEs as we enter a more globally competitive landscape. – Rappler.com
