The program is open to 400 students and out-of-school youth living in Makati

MANILA, Philippines – Young Makati residents looking for extra income this Christmas season can now apply for a 20-day paid internship spearheaded by the Makati Public Employment Service Office (Makati PESO).

Makati PESO manager Vissia Maria Aldon said on Tuesday, December 8, that 400 students and out-of-school youth living in Makati will be hired to do office and clerical work for various offices in the city.

In exchange, they will receive P7,215 as payment, equivalent to 75% of the P481 minimum wage for the private sector. (READ: Makati to host Mega Job Fair on December 11

According to acting Makati Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña Jr, the city government has allocated a total of P3 million for the project, a Government Internship Program (GIP) implemented by the Makati PESO together with the Department of Labor and Employment and the National Youth Commission.

The GIP is a component of the national government’s Kabataan 2000 project under Executive Order No 139, Series of 1993, which aims to provide opportunities for young workers to serve the public through various government projects and programs both in the local and national levels.

“We need to inculcate into the minds of our youth a sense of responsibility and accountability, and one of the best ways to do this is to expose them early to the world of work so they can earn for themselves and even for their respective families,” Peña said. – Rappler.com
