Ateneo de Davao showcases public exhibit on elections
The exhibit, set to last until the end of campaign period on May 7, showcases 100 faces and opinions of the Ateneo community - students, teachers, janitors, to vendors - regarding the Philippine elections

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Ateneo de Davao University’s (AdDU) Arrupe Office of Social Formation, the Ateneo Photographer’s Society (APS), and Ateneo Task Force 2016 (ATF) inaugurated their election exhibit “Ayo! Pamalandong Alang sa Eleksiyon” on Tuesday, May 3 at the city’s Abreeza Mall.

The joint project, which will last until the end of campaign period on May 7 showcases 100 faces and opinions of the Ateneo community – students, teachers, janitors, to vendors – regarding the Philippine elections.

“What happened was, personally as an Arrupe volunteer who wants to give back, I proposed the project in order to have an electoral engagement with the ATF and the Buklod Atenista,” Rexor Leong Amancio, APS president, shared.

He added that this was supposedly going to be purely social media based during initial planning in December 2015. But due to the students’ busy schedules, the project was then pushed prior to the elections.

Eanna Marie Fernandez, Arrupe Officer of Communications and Advocacy Programs, explained that the name of the project, “Ayo!” actually comes from a colloquial term used to knock on houses like. It also means, well or goodness, if translated from a vernacular term.

“We try to knock on everyone’s hearts so that they may realize that there is goodness within each of us and that there is goodness when we see the power of our voices and we speak out. After all, we are the electorates and we have the power to vote and change the country,” she said.

ATF 2016 Head Kimme Yajaira Sayman said they wanted to show the public that the Ateneo community cares about the elections. She added that these faces represent the community’s hopes, dreams, and reflections in the upcoming elections through their photos and answers.

“I hope that the voters will not just go with what the public is influencing them to do, but will also be aware and research about the platforms of the candidates,” she said.

Since the exhibit is showcased at the Abreeza Mall and the AdDU Jacinto campus, the organizers hope the exhibit will bring enlightenment to those who visit and ponder upon it – whether they are decided or undecided on who to elect on May 9. – Rappler.com
