The Thai company first set up its communication network in Tacloban City

MANILA, Philippines – Thaicom Plc, a leading Asian satellite operator, has assisted survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in restoring telecommunication services by collaborating with local telcos and government agencies.

In a press statement, Suphajee Suthumpun, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Committee, said the company has worked closely with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Department of Social Welfare and Development in ensuring telco services in Leyte and the Samar provinces in the aftermath of Yolanda.

“We have also sent our engineering team and equipment to the Philippines to install the satellite communication network in the damaged area,” he added.

Thaicom first set up its communication network in Tacloban City before expanding to other areas devastated by Yolanda. It has also donated cash through the Prime Minister’s office, Suphajee stated.

The company previously helped restore telco services in other countries hit by disasters such as during the Sichuan earthquake in China, the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, and the tsunami in Thailand.

The company was the first in the region to offer Ku-band and Digital Direct-to-Home broadcasting services, and was the world’s first operator to employ MPEG-2 DVB compression since 1994.

Thaicom also developed and launched the world’s first Internet Protocal (IP) satellite, IPSTAR. At present, IPSTAR offers broadband and mobile backhaul services to operators and service providers in 13 countries across the Asia Pacific.
