Cabangon launches freedom song writing contest
The contest is open to amateur composers, bands, musicians and singers of any age who are residents of the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines – Renowned singer and songwriter Noel Cabangon continues to inspire freedom, tolerance and good governance through his music.

To encourage more people to take on this advocacy, Cabangon and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) teamed up on Thursday, May 29, to launch the Freedom Song competition.

“Ako ay may laya, may laya managinip. Sinlaya ng awit mula sa pusong umiibig,” Cabangon sang before a crowd of 300 people in Cubao, Quezon City. (I am free, free to dream. I am free as a song from a heart’s in love)

“We want you to share your thoughts on freedom as a personal and as a social experience through music. The Freedom Song writing competition is a chance for amateur composers to showcase their talent and to inspire all of us to have a role in making our society and our lives more free,” Cabangon said.

The contest is open to amateur composers, bands, musicians and singers of any age who are residents of the Philippines.

The composition should be about the different aspects of freedom: (1) about the citizens’ role in promoting freedom, human rights and anti-corruption in today’s society, (2) about the values of liberty, responsibility and tolerance, (3) about how clean government and honest politics leads to development, or (4) about the freedom to pursue one’s personal dreams.

Deadline for entries is on July 31, 2014. The composition must be submitted in MP3 format to www.freedomsong.ph. Performance nights will be organized in famous music bars in Metro Manila, Baguio, Cebu and Davao as part of the preliminary judging.

A concert with the 10 finalists is scheduled on October 19, 2014. The top 10 songs will be published on a music CD, and the Jury’s Pick as well as the People’s Online Choice will win their own professional music video. More information is available on their website– Rappler.com
