MANILA, Philippines — The Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), and the Department of Education (DepEd), in cooperation with First Metro Investment Corp. (First Metro) announce the launch of the 2015 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) which will run from January to March 2015.

The competition is open to all elementary and secondary public and private school students nationwide. The deadline for submission of application to all DepEd Divisions is on December 5, 2014.

Meanwhile, the 2015 MMC competition will be officially launched online on October 6, 2014 via Facebook.

As part of the launching, the Foundation, in partnership with KooBits Philippines, is starting an online game called “#7MATHewdays: Are you smarter than a grade schooler?”, where netizens will answer sample math questions for grade school in a period of 7 days and dare their online friends to also take the challenge.

The MMC is an annual math competition that aims to awaken greater interest in math among elementary and high school students from across the country and to discover Mathematical talents among the youth.

Previously conducted in the National Capital Region, the Math Challenge was expanded to include elementary and high school students nationwide starting in 2001.

The 2014 MMC has attracted 568,021 students from elementary and high school levels representing 39,002 schools participated in the elimination rounds of the competition.

The annual math challenge produces national winners who get to compete and eventually win in international competitions. Among them are Carmela Lao and Adrian Reginald Sy, both 2011 MMC national winners who reaped a silver medal in the 51st and 55th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), respectively.

For generating positive responses from the academic community, the Metrobank Math Challenge bagged an Anvil Award of Excellence and Anvil Award of Merit for its Facebook Page during the 47th Anvil Awards by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines.  — Rappler.com
