MANILA, Philippines – Young Filipino students emerged as overall champion in their last international math competition for 2014 in Bogor, Indonesia.

All eight delegates from the Philippines won medals and awards in the 1st Challenge for Future Mathematicians 2014 held in Bogor from December 26 to 29.

The Philippines bagged 4 gold, 3 silver and one bronze medals in the individual competition and bested Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong in the medal tally, said Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

The country also won first and second runners-up in the puzzle contest.

Winning individual gold medals are Steven Reyes of St. Jude Catholic School, Immanuel Josiah Balete of St. Stephen’s High School, Naomi Anne King of St. Jude Catholic School and Vanessa Ryanne Julio of St. Jude Catholic School.

The silver medalists are Dominic Lawrence Bermudez of Notre Dame of Greater Manila, Jose Lorenzo Abad of Colegio San Agustin-Makati and Aiman Andrei Kue of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

Bagging a bronze medal is Maxinne Louise Dominique Co of Ateneo de Iloilo SMCS.

Chua said Philippine Team A, composed of Balete, Co, King and Reyes, bagged the overall champion award and also won second runner-up in the team puzzle competition.

On the other hand, Philippine Team B, composed of Abad, Bermudez, Julio and Kue, grabbed first runner-up in the puzzle contest.

The students were accompanied by team leaders Renard Eric Chua and Elmer Apistar.

The Philippine delegation arrived in Manila last night (December 29).
