This is a press release from the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines – A 17-year-old student of Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) was crowned as the country’s Sudoku grand master in the 9th Philippine Sudoku Super Challenge national finals held at SM City North EDSA’s Skydome.

Kaye Janelle Yao, a first year student of Applied Mathematics Major in Mathematical Finance at Ateneo, topped the Grand Master division for college students and professionals.

Yao bagged a P60,000-cash prize in the contest organized by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG) in cooperation with SM Supermalls and SM City Skydome.

“I joined this year not expecting anything, so it was both a shock and a relief that I won the title as champion,” said Yao, who won as first runner-up in the same category in 2014.

Alvin Ian Chan, the 2014 Sudoku grand master and also an Applied Mathematics student at Ateneo, won first runner-up and P40,000.

Natalia Beatrice Dy of S. John’s Institute in Bacolod won second runner-up and P20,000.

In the Wizard Division for high school students, Gerrick Spencer Limsiy of Grace Christian College bagged first place and P50,000.

He was followed by Bryan Russel Esperanza of St Louis University High School who won first runner-up and P30,000, and Jan Vincent Simbol of BHC Educational Institute, second runner-up and received P20,000.

In the Whiz Kid division for elementary students, 11-year-old Albriz Moore Bagsic of Lilyrose School in Tanauan City, Batangas, emerged as champion and took home P20,000.

First runner-up was Kirsten Dominique Chan of Bayanihan Institute in Tarlac City who won P10,000, followed by second runner-up Kyla Andrea Adlaon of International School for Better Beginnings who won P5,000.

Dr Simon Chua, MTG president, said this year’s winners will represent the Philippines in the 10th World Sudoku Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria in October, and other Sudoku contests in Singapore, Thailand and China.

More than 200 contestants qualified for this year’s national finals out of the 4,000 who joined the regional elimination rounds last October. – Rappler.com
