Media Revolution 2015: Are we Charlie?

MANILA, Philippines – On January 7, two armed individuals, clad in masks and bulletproof vests, stormed the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, gunning down 12 people. Let’s take a closer look at the incident and discuss the various issues surrounding it in a forum dubbed “Media Revolution 2015: Are We Charlie?”.

The forum will be held on February 11, 4 pm to 7 pm at the College of Mass Communication Auditorium, Plaridel Hall, Ylanan Road, UP Diliman. It aims to shed light on a number of issues the incident has raised including questions on press freedom, censorship, and the conflict between ethics and free speech.

Joining us in the event are guest speakers from various fields:

• Prof. Danilo Arao is the associate dean of the UP College of Mass Communication, where he also serves as a professor of journalism. He is a member of the Board of Editors of Bulatlat and he also writes for his column at Pinoy Weekly.

• Prof. Julkipli Wadi is the dean of the UP Institute of Islamic Studies. He is the program host of “Salam Radyo”, which airs every Tuesday on DZUP 1602. He is also an author of various academic pieces, including his book: “Islamic Nationalism and Philippine Politics”.

• Voltaire Tupaz, a multimedia reporter, is one of the pioneers of MovePH, Rappler’s citizen journalism and civic engagement arm. He’s a former chairperson of the student council of UP Baguio, where he studied Political Science and Economics. 

• Jhesset Enano is a UP Diliman journalism student. She was a recipient of the Philippine Daily Inquirer scholarship, and was a grantee of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in 2013. In 2012, her essay, entitled “What We Are Losing”, placed third in the Youth Essay Category of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature.

• Michael Joselo is a UP Diliman fine arts student. He is the convenor of Ugnayan ng Nagkakaisang Artista, a university-wide arts and culture based alliance, and was also the Grandmaster of the UP Artists’ Circle Fraternity.

The event is organized by the UP Broadcastersʼ Guild is, a socio-civic organization based in the College of Mass Communication at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. For the past 16 years, the group has been promoting social awareness and providing avenues for future media practitioners to hone their skills in production through responsible and effective media. – Rappler.com
