MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III said Wednesday, September 19, no other sector in the country has been able to match what the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has done for the Philippine economy.
In his speech at the 2nd day of the 2012 International Contact Center Conference and Expo (ICCCE), the President said that last year, using the lowest multiplier effect in terms of jobs generated, the BPO industry was able to create indirect employment for 1.6 million Filipinos.
“I believe you will agree with me when I say, the success of your sector in the Philippines is indeed unparalleled. In fact, in October 2010, you surpassed India to become the number one contact destination,” Aquino told the participants at the closing of the ICCCE.
Contact Center Association of the Philippines head Benedict Hernandez said revenues from voice-based businesses are projected at $8.4 billion in 2012, with 493,000 people expected to be employed.
“If you further exceed (this), I promise you I will not object,” the President remarked.
Hernandez said the industry — voice-based (call centers) and non-voice-based — created 638,000 direct jobs in 2011.
They intend to double this to 1.3 million direct jobs by 2016. They also intend to hit revenues worth $25 billion by 2016. – Rappler.com
