MANILA, Philippines – The government will reduce fare subsidies for Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) passengers, resulting in P10 fare hike by 2013.

In his first press briefing as Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary, Joseph Emilio Abaya confirmed the long delayed fare increase from the current P15.

This is because the government subsidy will go down to P35 from P45 per passenger so it could afford continuing the MRT-3 operations.

The actual cost of transporting passengers from end-to-end of the railway station (from North Edsa to Taft) is P60, he stressed.

“The P10 will help us lower our subsidy to P35,” explained the new DOTC chief.

“The P15 fare is not that bad considering that bus fares are higher,” he said, noting that the bus fare for the same distance costs P45.

“The proposed P10 increase maybe tolerable but not for the poorest of the poor,” he admitted. – Rappler.com
