MANILA, Philippines – National Treasurer Roberto Tan is leaving his post to take on a job at one of the world’s multilateral lenders.

Tan will fly to Washington, D.C. on October 31 to sit as executive director of the World Bank for two years starting November 1.

He will represent a group of 8 member-countries, including the Philippines, in the World Bank’s board.

No one has been appointed to replace Tan at the Treasury yet. His deputy, Eduardo Mendiola, is expected to assume his duties in the meantime.

Tan was appointed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as National Treasurer in 2008. He was re-appointed by President Benigno Aquino III to the post in 2010.

Prior to this, he was with the International Finance Group of the Department of Finance, where he served as undersecretary (2005), assistant secretary (1999), and director (1998-1995).

From 1999 to 2000, he was acting administrator and executive director of the Municipal Development Fund.

He also worked as advisor to the executive board of the Asian Development Bank from 1995 to 1998.
