Some 10.9 million families say they are poor last December, up from 9.5 million families in August

MANILA, Philippines – Despite the country’s high economic growth, more Filipinos considered themselves mahirap or poor as the year 2012 ended, results of the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed.

The SWS survey conducted from Dec. 8 to 11, 2012 found that 54% of respondents or 10.9 million households felt they were poor. This was 7 percentage points higher than the 47% or 9.5 million families recorded in SWS’ August survey.

The survey results, first published by BusinessWorld, also showed that households claiming they were poor in terms of food rose to 44% (8.9 million families) from 35% (7.2 million families) in August.

This was contrary to an earlier SWS report that said hunger among Filipino families fell to 16.3% in December from 21% in August.

To determine self-rated poverty, respondents from across the nation were asked to state where their families’ incomes fall: not poor, poor, or the borderline.

Self-rated poverty was the highest in Mindanao at 72% in December, and an average of 67% for the whole of 2012. Metro Manila saw the lowest rates at 42% in December, and an average of 41% in 2012. – Rappler.com
