MANILA, Philippines – Power retailer Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) pushed back the commercial launch of its prepaid electricity offer for Metro Manila consumers.

In a briefing on Tuesday, January 22, Meralco SVP for Customer Retail Services and Corporate Communications Alfredo Panlilio said the prepaid scheme will be ready for commercial launch by December this year, instead of the previous July schedule.

Panlilio said the scheme is now being tested by 40 households. He said they will conduct a “commercial” pilot test involving 2,000 households in Angono, Binangonan and Taytay in Rizal, and Pasig City in June.

The succeeding months before the commercial rollout in December will be spent to collate feedback on the pilot program, and obtain the approval of the Energy Regulatory Commission.

Ang nakikita naming commercial launch, is really gonna be on December 3. There are a lot of things to do,” Panlilio said.

“After June, we will have a sense if we can pull this forward,” he added.

Meralco initially set the commercial testing of the prepaid offer for February 2013 and launch for July. – Rappler.com
