MANILA, Philippines – Marking a first in the country, media and information firm Thomson Reuters announced it is now offering health insurance benefits to Philippine employees’ partners – whether of the same or opposite sex.
The company said it brought its Domestic Partners Eligibility Policy to its Philippine unit.
This is the first time it offered the policy in Asia. Its US and UK offices were the first ones to implement the policy.
“We foster an inclusive workplace where all employees are valued and have the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Thomson Reuters’ senior site officer and head of human resources Peter Buenaseda.
Under the policy, single employees in committed relationships may enroll their partners as beneficiaries of insurance and retirement plans.
Eligibility is determined via a set of criteria and submission of certain requirements.
The Family Code of the Philippines recognizes domestic partnership or “common-law marriage” between a man and a woman.
Same-sex couples however are a different story.
