MANILA, Philippines – Tiger Airways Philippines will temporarily stop its flights to Phuket, Thailand via the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

According to Jose Laurente, Jr., Tiger Airways vice president for commercial operations, the last flight to Phuket was mounted on December 15.

The flights from NAIA to Phuket were available for less than 3 months before being temporarily halted due to a low load factor of less than 50%.

Laurente said the airline needs a load factor of 80% to make a destination profitable. He also noted that the company “reviewed this and have found it to be a non-profitable route.”

Laurente clarified that the route was launched during the lean season. It may be revived after a review next year.

Tiger Air is looking at flying to Macau via NAIA, as well as to Incheon, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan via the Clark international airport in Pampanga in the first quarter of 2014.

The company currently flies to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bangkok. It also provides domestic flights to Kalibo and Davao City via the Clark international airport.

Tiger Air operates Manila-Cebu, Manila-Davao, Manila-Tacloban, Manila-Bacolod, Manila-Iloilo, Manila-Kalibo, and Manila-Puerto Princesa flights via NAIA Terminal 4 (NAIA 4). The Kalibo-Singapore flights are operated out of Kalibo International Airport, while the Manila-Phuket flights were operated out of NAIA 4. – Rappler.com
