MVP takes the #RiceBucketChallenge
The Philippines' alternative to Ice Bucket Challenge aims to help poor families, and business tycoons like Manny Pangilinan have been invited to do the challenge

MANILA, Philippines – Businessman Manny Pangilinan has taken the #RiceBucketChallengePH after hybrid rice pioneer Lim Bon Liong, the brainchild of the charity stunt, urged him to do it.

On Tuesday, September 16, Pangilinan tweeted: “Accepted Rice Bucket Challenge of friend, Henry Lim, when I return from Madrid/Hkg. Will give 100 sacks of rice. A good cause, a better idea.”

Pangilinan’s friend Lim, also a businessman, started the Ice Bucket Challenge alternative in the country, where instead of pouring a bucket of ice-cold water on themselves, participants donate buckets of rice to poor families. (READ: Water-starved South Asia fills buckets with rice, not ice)

The campaign aims to encourage other people through social media to donate one bucket of rice to people who cannot afford them.

Pangilinan pledged to give 100 sacks of rice, which translates to 5,000 kilos, while Lim has given away a total of 5,000 buckets to 5,000 families. Each bucket contains 5 kilos of rice.

Lim tagged people like Pangilinan, who he said hold the capacity to fulfil the challenge on a big scale. The first participants of the challenge were employees of Lim who donated almost 200 buckets to their neighborhood. – Mick Basa/Rappler.com
