UK firms eye business opportunities in PH
The biggest European chamber in the Philippines will hold two trade missions within the year to entice more British companies to do business in the country

MANILA, Philippines – About 10 British companies have expressed interest in doing business in the Philippines, banking on the positive outlook for the country’s economic growth.

British Chamber of Commerce Philippines (BCCP) chairman Chris Nelson told reporters in a luncheon meeting Thursday, July 30, that more British companies will scout for business ventures here next month.

For this year, the biggest European chamber in the Philippines, BCCP, will hold two trade missions in September and November to help British firms to explore business opportunities in the country.

“For the September trade mission, around 7 to10 [delegates] are coming; but we are hoping to exceed that,” Nelson said.

Although he did not identify these companies, he hinted that these are interested in “retail, distribution, outsourcing, and pharmaceuticals.”

“There’s even this company that wants to bring software to the finance sector,” Nelson added.

The trade mission in September, according to BCCP, will highlight dialogues with public and private sectors, include a visit to economic zones, and have one-on-one meetings between delegates and potential local partners.
“We have more socials and business events on our calendar and we’ll collaborate with key business players and the Philippine government,” Nelson told reporters. “We strongly encourage more companies to expand their networks and avail opportunities here.”

For the retail sector, he said more British brands are expected to come to the Philippines given the strong consumer spending here.

Among these British brands is coffee chain Costa Coffee, with over 3,000 stores globally, which opened its first outlet in the country this year. It is launching its second branch in Robinsons Manila on Friday, July 31.

Pay-TV subscriber management specialist Paywizard, is extending its Asia-Pacific footprint by setting up an engineering facility here in the Philippines, Nelson said.

“At first, we received inquiries from about 300 companies wanting to set their footprint here in the Philippines; but just like dating, as you go along, you funnel things, and now we’re down to around 10,” Nelson said.

“We hope talks with these 10 [British companies] will turn into actual business ventures here,” the BCCP chairman said. – Rappler.com
