The P215-million Roxas Airport expansion project will include the extension of the runway, expansion of the passenger terminal, and installation of night landing facilities

MANILA, Philippines – Major upgrades are in the works for Roxas Airport in Capiz province on Panay Island.

The P215-million Roxas Airport Development project, which is bankrolled by the Department of Transporation and Communications (DOTC) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), covers the extension of the airport’s runway and the improvement of facilities in its passenger terminal building.

“Malinaw po ang layon natin: ang higit pang patatagin ang turismo ng Capiz; ang bigyang lakas ang iba’t ibang negosyo’t industriya; at ang itulak ang inyong probinsya sa landas ng pag-asenso’t kaunlaran (Our objective is clear: to strengthen tourism in Capiz, to strengthen businesses and industries and to push your province towards the path of progress),” said President Benigno Aquino III during the groundbreaking ceremony for the airport on Wednesday, April 10.

Under the project, the passenger terminal’s total floor area would increase by 626 square meters (sqm) to 1,511 sqm from 875 sqm.

The additional space would hike the facility’s design capacity to 291,000 passengers per year from 153,000 passengers per year.

The airport terminal has breached its capacity with a total of 217,552 passengers coming through the airport in 2012.

The airport’s runway, on the other hand, would be extended by 120 meters to 2,010 meters from 1,890 meters to accomodate bigger aircraft, like local budget carriers’ Airbus A320.

The airport project also involves the installation of night landing facilities, a runway asphalt overlay, the acquisition of a new fire truck and land (for the airport site and the relocation of informal settlers).

Here is a breakdown of the project’s budget:

  • Extension of runway and improvements to passenger terminal – P48.1 million
  • Installation of night landing facilities – 91.5 million
  • Runway asphalt overlay – P24.24 million
  • New fire truck – P33.5 million
  • Site acquisition – 18 million

A number of airports are scheduled for expansion and rehabilitation as the Philippines aims to meet its target of 10 million tourists by 2016. Aside from Roxas Airport, other facilities set for projects are the P17.5 billion Mactan-Cebu International Airport, the P4.3 billion Puetro Princesa Airport and Clark Airport. – with reports from Christian B.
