MANILA, Philippines – Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL), jointly owned by taipan Lucio Tan and diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corporation, has revised its flight path for its Manila-London route to save on fuel.
PAL announced on Thursday, July 24, that it would now fly over the Eurasian region of Siberia en route to and from the cities of Manila and London to provide passengers the comfort and convenience of shorter and more competitive flight times.
The new flight route cuts Manila to London travel time of 15 hours and 30 minutes to around 13 hours, while the London-Manila flight is shortened to about 12 hours from 13 hours and 30 minutes.
“The route, which does not overfly any conflict zone, is the quickest option between Manila and London allowing PAL to save on fuel consumption while offering a much better product to its passengers,” the company said in a statement.
The old Manila-London-Manila flight path covers Southeast Asia, the Indian continent, Turkey, Middle East and Europe.
Siberia makes up nearly all of Northern Asia and 77% of Russia’s territory.
Flying on safe routes
PAL said the preferred airspace is nowhere near conflict and no-fly zones.
Pro-Russian rebels allegedly shot down Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in Ukraine on July 17, killing 298 passengers and crew members.
PAL allayed passengers’ fears following the tragic crash over Ukraine. It said it continues to strictly follow regulations on flight paths and complies with all safety advisories covering allowed flight routes, areas of restriction or conflict areas.
PAL started mounting direct flights to London in November, marking its return to the United Kingdom capital after 15 years. – Rappler.com
