Korean wind tower to rise in Catbalogan
The proposed wind tower, according to ODIN Energy, is about 11-story building with a minimum ground floor area of 113 square meters

SAMAR, Philippines –  South Korean-firm ODIN Energy eyes Catbalogan City in Samar as its pilot city for its proposed wind generation technology.

After inspecting some areas in the Philippines, the Korean investors finally decided to build the proposed ODIN wind tower at the Sky City Mega Project of Catbalogan City — which is a 15-hectare reserved lot for the construction of the proposed new Catbalogan City Hall.

The proposed tower, according to ODIN Energy Vice President Richard Jo, is an 11-story building with a minimum ground floor area of 113 square meters.

Jo said the size would depend on its capacity to generate electricity.

The proposed plant is seen to harness the wind and solar energy, ODIN Energy said.

ODIN said its wind power technology has the capability to generate 4 times more energy compared to the traditional ones.

The first 3 floors of the tower, according to ODIN Energy, can be used as a hospital, a school or offices.

“[T]he geographical location overlooking the city is a very good place to install the tower,” Jo said.

“We found the  city very interesting and we are very much thankful to the local officials here and to Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan for their support to us,” Jo added.

The Korean team is expected to return to the city in August or early September this year to finalize the feasibility study.

The feasibility study will be presented by ODIN Energy to the Korean Government.

The local government unit of Catbalogan, on the other hand, will contact its central government for assistance to “solidify the realization of the project,” Jo said.

Mayor Stephany Uy-Tan has ordered the formation of a technical working group that will facilitate the collection, consolidation and interpretation of data needed by the company for their feasibility study and market survey of the city for the viability of the project.

“This joint venture would not just make Catbalogan a more eco-friendly city but would also generate job opportunities for the locals in its construction and operation,” Uy-Tan said.

“With ODIN’s unique design with the proposed viewing deck on the topmost floor of the structure, it will dominate the Catbalogan skyline and it can draw tourists from around the country and beyond,” she added.

The construction period of the proposed wind tower is around 5 years, the Catbalogan mayor said.

Catbalogan City is soliciting help from the Department of Energy to fund the construction of the wind tower.

For its part, ODIN Energy will provide the technology, the turbines, the solar panels, as well as other auxiliary equipment and facilities.
