Lucio Co renewable energy firm starts operations
Controlled by one of the Filipinos listed in Forbes’ richest, the 12MW biomass facility commences phase 1 of its operations on March 6
MANILA, Philippines – The 12-megawatt (MW) renewable energy firm San Jose City I Power Corporation in Nueva Ecija began commercial operations on Friday, March 6.

The biomass facility is controlled by Lucio Co of Puregold supermarket chain who ranks no. 810 (with his wife, Susan) in Forbes 2015’s billionaires’ list.

Considered the first of its kind in the country, the San Jose biomass project would be using 100% rice husk.

The San Jose biomass facility is also set to expand by another 12MW by 2016, but phase 2 of the plan could happen within 2015, Department of Energy Director for Renewable Energy Management  Bureau Mario Marasigan said.

The first 12MW costs P1 billion ($12.69 million), and the same amount could also be spent for the second phase of expansion, said the company’s chief operating officer Edgardo Alfonso.

The project is also expected to avoid the burning of about 74,000 tons of sub-bituminous coal or the emission of 40,000 tines of carbon dioxide, thus contributing to the global effort to mitigate the green house effect of harmful gasses.

Co’s Union Energy was previously reported to be partnered with Sta. Clara Power for a P1.9 billion, 8-megawatt (MW) hydropower plant project in Catuiran, Oriental Mindoro. The project is expected to begin in 2016. – Rappler.com
