San Miguel Purefoods acquires La Pacita biscuits trademark
After its failed bid to acquire UK’s United Biscuits, the diversified conglomerate acquires the nearly century-old homegrown biscuits maker

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Purefoods Company, Inc of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corporation has acquired the trademark of local biscuits manufacturer, La Pacita.

For over 90 years, La Pacita has been manufacturing biscuits, cookies, and crackers, with major products such as its famous Pacencia wheat drop cookies,  Camachile, Club Crackers, Supreme Flakes, and raisin cookies.

San Miguel Purefoods’ acquisition of La Pacita’s trademark came after the company’s failure to be shortlisted in the sale of British snacks maker United Biscuits.

San Miguel president and chief operating offer Ramon S. Ang said earlier this month that San Miguel was no longer vying for United Biscuits, but continues to look for investment opportunities. And that opportunity is now La Pacita.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, San Miguel Purefoods said it entered into a deal with La Pacita manufacturer Felicisimo Martinez & Co on November 19 “to acquire the trademarks, formulation, recipes, and other intangible properties relating seller’s La Pacita biscuit and flour-based snack business.”

“The completion of the transaction is still subject to the fulfilment of the certain terms and conditions,” San Miguel Purefoods said.

In July, San Miguel Purefoods announced it will expand a flour mill in Batangas and build two new factories in preparation for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) economic integration in 2015.

A number of European firms had also expressed interest to team up with the company in building the new flour milling facilities.

The expansion will also allow San Miguel Purefoods to meet the growing demands of the domestic and regional flour market. Rappler.com
