MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is bidding out a P713-million contract for the maintenance of the Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3).

The agency released an “invitation to bid” on Tuesday, March 26. It announced that it would accept bids for a one-year maintenance contract until April 15.

“To ensure that the MRT-3 system operates under safe running conditions with on-time and reliable performance in providing convenience to all passengers, while on one hand effectively maintains cost at a minimum level with a reliable system, the DOTC-MRT-3 is inviting bidders for a one-year maintenance service provider contract for MRT-3,” the agency said.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya earlier announced that the DOTC plans to formalize a $1-billion government takeover of MRT-3. President Benigno Aquino III ordered the agency to buy out MRT-3 private shareholders as outlined in a build-lease-transfer agreement.

The rail system runs from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City. It serves an average of 600,000 passengers per day. It was designed to carry only 350,000 passengers a day. – Rappler.com
