MANILA, Philippines – The transportation department is conducting a study on the feasibility of extending the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) from its current Recto terminal to the Manila Port area.
“[We are] currently undertaking the feasibility study of extending LRT-2. The termination point of LRT-2 right now is in Recto, we are studying the feasibility of extending this to the Port Area,” said Transportation secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya.
He shared this to reporters on the sidelines of the October 9 inauguration of the P200 million Manila North Harbor passenger terminal, which is in the area proposed to be the next end point of the rail line.
The proposed LRT-2 extension would be on top of the P9.7-billion LRT-2 East Extension project.
Abaya said that the cost and other project details would be determined when the feasibility study is completed.
The planned extension could provide residents around Manila North Harbor access to cheaper transport.
“As I said the poverty incidence in Tondo is quite high and having a mass transit to serve them opens opportunities for them. It just happens there is a connector line passing here and hopefully that complements the people who live here and those passing here,” he added. Tondo is a district in Manila known for its slums.
Initially, a study said it was not viable to build the rail transit extension. Abaya expressed confidence that with the bidding for LRT-1 Cavite extension and other connector roads in the works, interconnectivity would play a part in proving the port-area extension’s viability. The LRT-2 East Extension plan, on the other hand, would extend the 13.8-kilometer Santolan-Recto line to Emerald Station (Robinson’s Place Metro East) in Cainta, Rizal and the Masinag Station in Antipolo City, Rizal. – Rappler.com
