Jeepney fare rollback hearing set on November 17
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is set to hear a lawmaker’s petition to reduce the jeepney fare to P8, following diesel price rollbacks

MANILA, Philippines – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will hear the petition for a jeepney fare rollback on Monday, November 17.

The LTFRB said a notice of hearing was already sent to Negros Oriental Representative Manuel Iway who filed a petition to reduce the minimum fare for public utility jeepneys (PUJs) to P8 ($0.18*) from P8.50 ($0.19) for the first 4 kilometers.

The current jeepney fare was implemented on June 14 this year.

Iway also asked that the succeeding kilometer for jeepney fare rate be set to P1.40 ($0.031) from P1.50 ($0.033) in Metro Manila, and Regions 3 and 4.

Iway is a former LTFRB board member.

The petitioner has 15 days prior to the date of the hearing to publish the notice of hearing in a newspaper of general circulation.

The petitioners are also required to submit proof of compliance with the jurisdictional requirements.

The LTFRB will also allow parties contesting or opposing the approval of the proposed fare reduction to file, in written form, their position prior to the hearing date.

Both parties must also appear to submit their position papers on the hearing date.

LTFRB chairman Winston Ginez said that the Board understands the plight of the passengers, drivers, and operators, thus the hearing to discuss Iway’s petition.

“We need to hear both sides, the petitioners, as well as the parties opposing the fare hike, before we can arrive at a sound decision,” Ginez said. – Rappler.com
