MANILA, Philippines – Karylle topbills the new version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.”

And she’s back with Christian Bautista to make music and spark chemistry.

In an interview with the singer-actress, she said she found it surreal to be playing the production’s lead.

But “this has always been one of my dream roles,” Karylle said.

Karylle is a big fan of Cinderella and its many adaptations.

“I remember watching Ms. Lea Salonga again at the CCP Main Theater.

“Mag-isa ako noon, kasi ang mahal ng ticket, sabi ko nandun ako sa box sa very back.” (I was alone and the ticket was expensive. I was there at the box, at the very back.)

“I actually have her [Lea’s] autograph. Up to now nakasabit siya sa CenterStage sa Tomas Morato,” the karaoke bar Karylle partly owns.

Updated version

How will this “Cinderella” be different from the others?

“I am actually excited about the ideas I’ve heard,” Karylle said.

“Pero siyempre isisikreto muna namin yun for now.” (But of course we’re keeping this a secret for now.)

“[But] this is an updated verison because they are going to….Paano ba i-describe [How do i describe this] without telling too much?

“[They’re going to make] it more modern in ways that would really make it memorable for everyone.”

Karylle will be working again with Christian Bautista, her Prince in this production.

“K-lan” (Karylle and Christian) have been quite a “kilig” pair that when they don’t perform together, as in last month’s  2013 Philpop Music Festival, one can fancy a sense of unfulfilled longing between their separate assignments.

At Philpop, Karylle performed Lara Maigue’s “Sa ‘Yo Na Lang Ako,” and Christian, Marlon Barnuevo’s “Araw, Ulap, Langit.”

It’s no surprise anymore that producers are eager to pair them.

“It’s been years actually since we’ve been together on stage,” Karylle said.

“Of course we did ‘Rama Hari,’ [although it was] more of a…ballet musical. But this time, we are doing a full musical.

“Matagal ko na ‘tong inaantay.” (I’ve been waiting for this.)

“But really I am looking forward to sing and be on stage again.

“Before this, we had ‘The Kitchen Musical’ and ‘Rama Hari,’ [so somehow I got to see Christian do ballet].

“This time, I am excited…to discover [something new] about Christian.”

What’s it like to be part of a grand production?

“Siyempre hindi ako makapaniwala kasi [Of course, I can’t believe it, because] this is one of the biggest things I’ve done in a long time. [And it’s] ‘Cinderella.’

“It is truly magical para sa mga kabataan, para sa lahat [for the kids, for everyone], for people of all ages to be brought back to your childhood and be back in that fairy tale again.” – Rappler.com
