Idina Menzel on ‘Adele Dazeem’ flub: ‘It’s all cool’

MANILA, Philippines – “Let it go,” is what actor John Travolta believed singer Idina Menzel would have wanted him to do regarding his infamous “Adele Dazeem” Oscar blunder. Indeed, Menzel recently told Billboard that she and Travolta are “buddies” and that “it’s all cool.”

Moments before going on stage to sing the famous song “Let It Go” at the 2014 Oscars, Menzel revealed she had psyched herself up for her performance. When Travolta mistakenly introduced her as “Adele Dazeem,” the Tony award-winner said she was thrown off for a minute, but quickly regained composure.

After the name flub, Travolta reportedly sent her flowers and an email.

“He was really gracious and sent this gorgeous email, and we’re buddies, and it’s all cool,” she told Billboard. “Please. I mean, I’ve only benefited from it.”

True enough, Travolta’s Oscar flub gave birth to new Internet sensation, Adele Dazeem. Memes, jokes, and even an app to “Travoltify” other names, popped up all over the Internet.

Travolta previously said he had been “beating himself up” because of his mistake, but the slip actually served as a kind of publicity for some of Mendel’s projects, such as the Broadway show If/Then and Netflix’s streaming of the 2005 film adaptation of Broadway musical Rent. 

Idina Menzel’s Frozen hit theme song, composed by Filipino-American Robert Lopez and his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, won  Best Original Song at the 2014 Oscars. Numerous covers of the song have also popped up online, including a multilingual version of the song.

In the Billboard feature, Menzel said she tried out for Disney’s animated film Tangled in 2010. Although it didn’t push through, Idina told Billboard that the casting director recorded her audition on her phone, and called Menzel to come in for early readings of Frozen.

Despite being a famed theater singer, Menzel told Billboard that the song is “demanding” to sing.

“It’s a demanding song to sing actually. I’m glad they think it fits my voice…It’s quite the acrobatic song,” she told Billboard, adding however, that it was a challenge she gladly took on.

According to Menzel, the worldwide success of “Let It Go” has been “an incredible ride” and it’s like a “gift that keeps giving.” – Rappler.com
