MANILA, Philippines – The orphan girl everybody loved on Broadway is making a comeback on the big screen – with a modern twist.
Quite different from the 1982 movie and the musical, the upcoming Annie will feature Academy Award nominee and African American Quvenzhane Wallis (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”) for the title role, deviating from the signature red-headed character.
Wallis will play the young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York, despite her hard-knock life after being left with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan, who will be played by Cameron Diaz.
Actor Jamie Foxx will be taking on the role of Will Stacks, the modern day version of Oliver Warbucks – a hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate who’s advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale), that taking an orphan in would do his campaign good.
The movie, produced by Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jay-Z, recently released its very first trailer and is set to open January 2015.
