MANILA, Philippines – 22 Jump Street star Channing Tatum is set to become Gambit, one of the most popular X-Men characters.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) says Tatum has signed on to star in an X-Men spinoff centered on the character of Gambit last played by Taylor Kitsch.

Sources told THR that Tatum’s character will debut in X-Men: Apocalypse and will later on get a stand-alone spinoff.

No director has been tapped yet and the movie is still on its development stage.

Asked about her decision to cast Tatum, X-Men producer Shuler Donner said: “It’s Channing. Well you know, he’s a rogue – Channing – he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau, and he can handle the action, we all know that! And he’s got a really good heart. He’ll be great for Gambit.”

“And he’s a Southerner, too! He’s not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner, and he understands that world,” Donner added.

Tatum’s casting is a welcome development as it comes at a difficult time for the franchise with sex-abuse allegations being floated against director Bryan Singer.

Donner also told THR that there was a secret movie she couldn’t talk about yet. “There’s one I’m really itching to tell you about but I can’t,” she told THR. “You’re gonna like it though. I guarantee you. It’s really different, but you’re going to like it.” – Rappler.com
