Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson sing ‘All I Ask Of You’ from ‘Phantom of the Opera’

MANILA, Philippines – Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson channeled childhood sweethearts Raoul de Chagny and Christine Daae with this performance of “All I Ask Of You,” from the musical The Phantom of The Opera. (WATCH: Jimmy Fallon and Kelly Clarkson perform ‘History of Duets’)

The song will be part of his upcoming album Stages, a collection which features songs from famous musicals like Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, among others.  

“All I Ask of You” is a duet between childhood sweethearts Vicomte Raoul and Swedish singer Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running, iconic stage adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. The song was sung to signify the promise Raoul made to Christine on the rooftop of the operahouse, to protect her always from the obsessed Phantom.  

The song’s first recording started in 1986 with Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ex-wife and the inspiration for Christine, and Cliff Richard who played Raoul. Since then, others have covered the song like Britain’s Got Talent’s Susan Boyle.  

The Phantom of the Opera is the story of a disfigured pariah called the Phantom who takes up residence in a Paris opera house. He soon takes young Swedish singer Christine Daae under his wing to make her into a great singer, but tragically falls in love with her in the process. Of course, Christine’s childhood friend Raoul comes into the picture.
