MANILA, Philippines – Aleron, an all-male Filipino choir, has another win to add to their growing collection of awards. They won the Takarazuka International Chamber Chorus Contest (TICC) in Japan on Saturday, July 25.
Aleron started out small in 2006, as the alumni ensemble of the Ateneo de Manila High School Glee Club, but have since expanded to have have members from diverse backgrounds.
The TICC isn’t the first competition they’ve won either. They won Grand Prize at the 10th Busan Choral Festival and Competition in South Korea last year, and First Prize in the Vocal Ensemble category of the 1st Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival in 2013.
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts gave Aleron a financial grant to send them to Japan to compete, and it looks like their investment paid off. Aleron beat 22 other choirs, most of whom hailed from Japan, and also won Gold Prizes in the categories Folklore and Contemporary.
The TICC is a festival organized by Japan’s “city of music,” Takarazuka. The TICC wants to encourage performances at the Vega Hall, where this year’s competition took place, because they want to pursue the essence of choral singing. The TICC and Vega Hall believe “that music and artistic pursuits could serve as beacons of peace.”
Congratulations, Aleron! – Rappler.com
