‘Fashion Pulis’ arrested over libel charges
(2nd UPDATE) Popular blogger Michael Sy Lim, better known as the individual behind the popular 'Fashion Pulis' blog, is arrested over a blog post that revealed Deniece Cornejo's leaked medical report

MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) – Popular gossip blogger Michael Sy Lim was arrested August 11, Tuesday, over a libel case filed by Deniece Cornejo.

Lim, better known as the man behind the blog “Fashion Pulis” was arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP)’s Women and Children Protection Unit at around 1130 am Tuesday, according to a report from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDG).

Lim was arrested along Leviste St in Makati city based on a warrant earlier issued by an Antipolo court. A bail of P16,000 was recommended for Lim, according to police.

The suspect was brought to the CIDG headquarters in Camp Crame Tuesday afternoon.

“The arrest was conducted in response to the request of Ms Deniece Cornejo and Atty Ferdinand Topacio as part of the CIDG Quality Assurance Support to Victims program,” the CIDG said.

The libel case stems from a post on Lim’s blog which contained Cornejo’s medical report which was supposedly leaked by Healthway.

The medical report was taken after Cornejo was allegedly raped by actor Vhong Navarro. In the report, Healthway concluded that Cornejo may have a sexually transmitted disease. Topacio said they are also eyeing a civil case against Healthway.

Vindication

In a statement, Topacio said, “The arrest today of Mr Michael Sy Lim aka Fashion Pulis  is a vindication of the rights of my client, Ms. Deniece Cornejo, and more importantly, it sends the message that cyberbullying and victim-bashing, in whatever form and from whichever source, has no place in civilized discourse.”

He added, “While free expression is indispensable in a democracy, that freedom must be exercised responsibly and with due regard to the rights of women to privacy and decency. Rights must not be used to violate the rights of others.”

Lim, who is also a professor, freelance host and wedding singer has gotten a lot of flak from local celebrities who felt alluded to in the blind items featured on his blog.

On Twitter, Lim expressed dismay over his arrest. “Held in the CIDG office. Sad how people abuse libel to curtail press freedom.”

Deniece came into the public spotlight after she accused actor Vhong Navarro of raping her last year. The complaint was dismissed by the Department of Justice.  – Rappler.com
