MANILA, Philippines – Etiquette for Mistresseshits theaters this week, and the story, about the friendship between a group of ladies who are also mistresses, has social media users buzzing. A few of the stars, Kris Aquino, Iza Calzado, and Claudine Barretto, spoke about the topic at a recent press conference for their movie, sharing shared their thoughts about mistresses, the themes of the movie, and more on the controversial topic. Kris was very open about her past experiences and relationships when she answered the question of whether or not she and her co-stars could ever take on becoming a mistress in real life.

“It’s not a secret I was in two relationships with men who were not annulled,” started Kris.

Kris had a son, Joshua, with actor Phillip Salvador. Kris became pregnant with Joshua while Phillip was separated – but not annulled – from his wife, Emma Ledesma.

Kris was also in a relationship with actor Joey Marquez while his marriage to Alma Moreno was not yet annulled.

Kris continued that while it is true that she had those relationships, she’s only answerable to her son, Bimby Aquino Yap. “It’s reality, wala akong tinatago dahil alam naman ni Bimb, so kung the only person I’m answerable to is 8 years old – and alam niya kasi sabi ko mababasa niya sa Internet, mapapanood niya sa YouTube – so sinabi ko hindi madali kasi you’re really judged,” she said.

(It’s reality, I have nothing to hide since Bimb knows anyway, the only person I’m answerable to is 8 years old – and he knows because I said he’ll read it on the Internet, he’ll see it on YouTube – so I said it’s not easy because you’re really judged.)

She admitted that while she was in those relationships, she heard the word “kabit” (mistress) often.

Bimby is Kris’ son with professional basketball player James Yap. Kris and James’ marriage was annulled in 2014. Although the couple kept the reasons for their annulment private, James was linked to other women during their marriage.

Having “looked at love from both sides now,” Kris said that she could never share her partner with another woman. “So sa totoo lang, pipiliin ko yung madali, yung wala kang kaagaw, yung wala kang kailangang ka-share, kasi tama yung sinabi ni Iza, who really wants to share a man?”

(So in all honesty, I would choose the easy choice, the one where you have no rival, the one where you don’t have to share, because what Iza said is right, who really wants to share a man?)

Claudine answered that she really can’t say if she can or can’t live the life of a mistress, because women who are mistresses have their own unique reasons for making that choice. “Sa society na ‘to, it really exists. Marami tayong kilala around us na ang pinili sa na buhay ay yung ganong klase na buhay na – ‘di dahil sa pera lang, dahil sa iba-iba ang rason, kagaya ng mga babae sa movie na ‘to iba-iba yung mga rason kung bakit sila nagmamahal ng may nagmamay-ari ng iba.

(In this society, it really exists. We know a lot of people around us that chose the kind of life that – not only because of money, because of a lot of reasons, like the women in the movie who have different reasons for loving those who belong to other people.)

Hindi naman natin ginoglorify yung mga mistresses, pero hindi rin namin sila cinocondemn or jinajudge,” she added. (We’re not glorifying mistresses, but we’re not condemning or judging them, either.)

Claudine said that at the end of the day, it’s an individual’s choice whether or not to be with someone who is in a relationship with someone else.

“I personally I don’t think kakayanin ko (I can handle it) because I’m very possessive,” said Iza.

She added that she can’t really say that she’d never be okay with being a mistress because she doesn’t know what the future holds. “Pero hindi ko rin masasabi na never, because mahaba pa ang buhay ko at mahirap magsalita nang tapos, pero I think I would choose not to be kasi di ko siya kakayanin.

(But I can’t say never either, because I still have a long life to live and it’s difficult to say anything final, but I think I would choose not to be because I can’t handle it.)

Etiquette for Mistresses is about a group of friends, mistresses who are navigating their relationship and are making their way through life. A new woman joins the group and we’re introduced to their world as they go through the ups and downs of their various lives. The movie is based on a book by Julie Yap-Daza and is directed by Chito Rono. – Rappler.com
