WATCH: Ariana Grande sings Broadway tunes at surprise performance
Ariana sings songs from '13,' the Broadway musical she was a part of in 2008

MANILA, Philippines – Before she was a pop star, Ariana Grande was singing on Broadway – the musical 13, to be exact, with music and lyrics by Tony award-winner Jason Robert Brown.

On Monday, January 4, Ariana surprised the guests at Jason’s concert in Hollywood, by joining him onstage and singing a few songs from the musical.

“I happened to bump into an international pop star the other day and I asked her if it would be fun to sing a tune or two, and she said, ‘Three,’ and I said, ‘Three is fine,’ Jason recounted from behind a piano before introducing Ariana.

Ariana then came up on stage, wearing big glasses and an oversized sweater, to sing the 3 songs she said she’d perform.

From 13, Ariana sang “The Lamest Place In the World.” She also sang “Brand New You” from 13, with Shoshana Bean, known for her role as Elphaba in the Broadway musical, Wicked.

Shoshana posted a message on Instagram about their duet, saying, “There are rare occasions in life when all the stars align and you couldn’t derail them if you tried. Last night was one such occasion. The extreme amount of unfiltered JOY that I felt in my heart cannot be described and certainly can’t be captured in a single photo or 15 second video. Singing with my lil sis @arianagrande again last night was just ONE moment among a zillion other smiles and laughs and tears and hugs and kisses and chords and notes and words strung together that made it a night unlike any other. It was magical.”

There are rare occasions in life when all the stars align and you couldn’t derail them if you tried. It was magical. And today I have a total hangover from indulging in music and love and joy and gratitude. Jason, you and your music are two of the best things that ever happened to me. In between the two songs, Ariana sang “Getting Out,” from Jason’s album Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes. Ironically, “It was a song about me being really grouchy that I wasn’t an international pop star,” shared Jason.

Ariana played Charlotte, a cheerleader, in 13 in 2008, before she landed a role in Nickelodeon’s Victorious in 2009. She released her first album in 2013.
