Kris Aquino on Madonna’s EDSA 30 tribute, speaks out against martial law
(UPDATED) 'Madonna's shoutout to us celebrating People Power awakened me,' writes Kris Aquino on Instagram

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour gives fans the chance to join her on stage and be her “b*tch” for the night.

In Madonna’s 2-day Manila concert at the Mall of Asia Arena, Shahani Gania (aka Super Starlet) and a lady in a flapper tux, Pat, got that chance during the song “Unapologetic B*tch.”

TV host Kris Aquino revealed on Instagram that she was also offered to join the Queen of Pop onstage, but turned down the stellar opportunity. She also missed the concert itself.

Posting a friend’s video of Madonna’s spiel before the surprise “Crazy for You” performance, she explained, I so wanted to watch pero nahiya ako (but I was shy) – I’m not fun, I can’t dance, and the gracious invitation from her producers to invite me up on stage to be her b*tch for the night scared me – because I knew mapapahiya lang ako (I would have been embarrassed) for having no beat, no cool vibe & 2 left feet.”

Madonna turned her surprise performance of “Crazy for You” into a tribute to the 1986 People Power Revolution, saying, “30 years ago, today, something very important happened here in the Philippines. You fought for your freedom. Am I correct?”

Aquino, the daughter of People Power icons Benigno “Ninoy” and Corazon Aquino, responded in the same Instagram post, “Thank you, Madonna, for your shoutout honoring our history.”

“I cried happy tears, in honoring the Filipinos’ peaceful victory for freedom, Madonna reminded us how proud we should be to live in a democratic Philippines,” added Aquino.

Saying that she was inspired by Madonna’s shoutout, Aquino took to Instagram to speak about martial law. She wrote, “Madonna’s shoutout to us celebrating People Power awakened me. I’ve been quiet about politics in because I didn’t want to appear that as an Aquino we were making it about us… But by keeping quiet, parang what happened was okay & move on na lang…”

“I was 1 year old when my dad was imprisoned, I was 12 when he was assassinated… I researched Martial Law kasi nakakahiya na ang hugot ko (because I was ashamed to act) based on emotions, so I read up – ninakaw sa ‘tin ang (we were deprived of) freedom of assembly, freedom from unreasonable searches & seizures, freedom from unlawful imprisonment, freedom to have court proceedings, and freedom of speech.”

She continued to write, “Seriously – papayag ba kayong kunin itong muli sa ‘tin? (will you allow these rights to be taken away again?) Madaling magsalita at maging matapang ngayon (It’s so easy to speak and be daring today) – because we live in a democracy.”

“But my dad & mom, Ninoy & Cory Aquino were brave even when they were stripped of basic human rights. And I choose to honor their courage & all the others who gave their lives for us to have the 30 years of freedom we now take for granted.”

In another post, the ABS-CBN host added, “Namili ako ng isang bagay (I’ve chosen one thing) we’ve taken for granted & some politicians have conveniently forgotten – pinasara at inagaw ang ABS-CBN dahil nung Martial Law ninakaw sa ‘tin ang freedom of expression.”
