Colton Haynes comes out, discusses health issues and career
The actor opens up about taking time to work on his health at the peak of his career, and coming out now that he's ready

MANILA, Philippines – Actor Colton Haynes, known for his role as Roy Harper in Arrow and Jackson Whittemore in Teen Wolf, reflected about his career, health issues, and coming out in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly

He said that in the past, he was not ready to come out yet, though some took a Tumblr comment as a public coming out moment for Colton.

It was a complete shock. I wasn’t ready to be back in the headlines,” he said.

“I should have made a comment or a statement, but I just wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet. But I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward with the rest of what I should have said.”

The actor also talked about the image people want to project about him, saying: “People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realize that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world.”

Colton also talked about leaving his two shows amid his rising popularity and success as well as his health status.

“I asked to step away because I cared more about my mental and physical health than my career at the time,” Colton said, adding at the age of 27 years old, he was suffering from an ulcer and that he had anxiety issues all his life.

Now with a new chapter opening in his life, Colton said he ready to work again whether it be a movie, comedy, music, fashion, or art. Colton also said that resting from all the chaos has given him new perspective in life.

“It took me so long to get to this point, but I’m doing so good,” he said. “I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and healthier than I’ve ever been, and that’s what I care about.”

Prior to the interview, Colton posted a message on Instagram for his supporters.

“So happy to make more art with [The Tyler Shields]. Today I hit 4 million followers on Instagram. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude & love to all of you who’ve continued to support me. I know I can be odd  and come off a bit weird sometimes but honestly…my career & life didn’t actually start flourishing until the day I decided to listen to my own instincts and do what I want to do/be myself and not mask that. I’m not going to conform to what people think is normal…and neither should any of you. That’s so freakin boring haha. Be weird. Be yourself cause at the end of the day…that’s honestly all that matters. Let people see the real, imperfect, flawed, quirky, weird, beautiful, & magical person that you are. Sending love to all of you :)”
