'It’s two more seasons we’re talking about. From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now,' David Benioff says in an interview

MANILA, Philippines – Valar morghulis. All men must die, or in the case of HBO’s Game of Thrones, all good things must come to an end.

Deadline Hollywood recently spoke to showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss and discussed the season 6 finale with them. One particular point in the discussion stood out: they said that they are looking to wrap up the wildly popular fantasy series in “two more seasons.”

“It’s two more seasons we’re talking about. From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70-75 hours, and that’s what we’ll end up with. Call it 73 for now,” said Benioff.

The show’s creators said that they don’t want to overstay their welcome and are “trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end.”

“We’ve been talking about the ending, from the beginning. It’s a strange phenomenon, we’re in this territory where you are walking on your own and can’t rely on the written material anymore,” Benioff added, referring to how the TV series has overtaken the narrative of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books..

“As we get close to the ending, we’ve been talking about that for so long, things come into better focus. Once we get to the final end game, we’ve got very specific ideas that have grown organically over the past six plus years about where everything will end up.”

Benioff pointed out that the season finale clearly showed how closure for the series is imminent.

He said, “Daenerys is finally coming back to Westeros; Jon Snow is king of the North and Cersei is sitting on the Iron Throne. And we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them. The pieces are on the board now. Some of the pieces have been removed from the board and we are heading toward the end game.” (READ: ‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 finale recap: Shocking revelations galore)

According to HBO, however, nothing is official about the figures that Benioff and Weiss gave.

HBO said in a statement quoted by Entertainment Weekly: “Any conversations about the end of Game of Thrones and the number of episodes of future seasons is purely speculative.”

“As is customary, HBO will sit with Dan and David to discuss the details once a decision has been made to go forward with season 7.”

In a previous interview from April, Variety spoke to Benioff and Weiss, who also floated a similar idea of ending the series soon. The former said, “I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap.”

“That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”

The season 6 finale, which aired on June 27, Monday, raked in a record of around 8.9 million viewers, a testament to the show’s popularity. – Rappler.com
