Naya Rivera reveals past abortion, struggle with anorexia
'It was very scary to open up about everything. It's not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should,' Naya tells 'People'

MANILA, Philippines – Naya Rivera, known for her role as Santana on the TV series Glee, revealed that she had an abortion on one of her days off from filming the show. She opened up about this painful experience in her new memoir.

An excerpt from Naya’s memoir, Sorry Not Sorry, was released in the latest issue of People magazine. She also spoke to People about some of the experiences she shared in the book.

In Sorry Not Sorry, Naya said that she found out she was pregnant with Ryan Dorsey’s child weeks after breaking up with him in 2010 to focus on her career.

Naya chose to put her career first and to get an abortion during one of her days off.

Naya married Ryan in 2014 and they now have an 11-month-old son together, Josey.

“It was very scary to open up about everything. It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should,” said Naya to People on writing about her experience. “I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”

Naya also expressed that she hoped Josey would read the book one day. “I hope it gives him a better perspective on the issues women face.”

Anorexia

Naya also wrote about her battle with anorexia as a teenager.

She was a sophomore in high school, she recounted, when she began to realize that perhaps she had gone too far, even throwing away the lunch her mom packed for her to avoid food.

She told People: “I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm. Everyone was going through similar stuff. I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it.”

At the time, Naya was also going through her parents’ split and a standstill in her career.

She added that she didn’t know how bad her condition was until she wrote about it in Sorry Not Sorry.
