Atom Araullo: Political views ‘not a factor’ in resignation as ABS-CBN reporter
Atom Araullo says he quietly resigned as a news reporter of ABS-CBN to 'explore other areas of media and to grow as a journalist'

MANILA, Philippines – Journalist Alfonso Tomas “Atom” Araullo will no longer be doing reportorial duties for the news division of television network ABS-CBN but clarified that it is not because of his political views.

“I quietly resigned as a news reporter of ABS-CBN a few weeks ago to explore other areas of media and to grow as a journalist,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday, August 28. “However, I continue to work with the network and our programs. My political views were not a factor in making this decision.”

Despite stepping down from his position at the news department, Araullo clarified that he will continue appearing in other programs of the television network such as Umagang Kay Ganda and Red Alert.

Araullo’s stand on controversial issues such as the burial of former president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery) and Martial Law, which he posted on his Twitter account, have become viral recently with many accusing him of being biased.

However, the former student activist said that standing up for the truth “does not weaken our journalism,” adding that the guiding principles of journalism are “fairness and accuracy.”

“Having studied pressing issues based on fact and with an open mind, journalists, like any other individual, should ultimately stand up for the truth,” Araullo explained. “This does not weaken our journalism, it strengthens it.”

“Our guiding principles are fairness and accuracy,” he added. “As we face tougher scrutiny from the public, we in media also strive to be more transparent and open to criticism.”

Araullo, an Applied Physics graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman, started his broadcasting stint at a young age as part of the children’s show 5 and Up before becoming a producer and field reporter at ABS-CBN News. – Rappler.com
