The Avengers assemble…for matching tattoos
Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Chris Evans all get matching tattoos

MANILA, Philippines – Record-breaking movie, check. A cinematic universe that’s changed the rules of the game, check. Matching tattoos, check.

Weeks after the release of the much-awaited and much-talked about Avengers: Infinity War, several of the original Avengers got matching tattoos.

On Instagram, Robert Downey Jr aka Iron Man posted videos and pictures of himself, Scarlett Johansson aka Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth aka Thor, and Jeremy Renner aka Hawkeye getting matching tattoos to commemorate the movie franchise.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Robert said 5 of them got tattoos, with Mark Ruffalo aka The Hulk opting out. Scarlett and Chris Evans (Captain America) got theirs in New York. Josh Lord, a tattoo artist based in New York, flew to Los Angeles to ink Robert, Jeremy, and Chris, said Robert.

In return, they also got to ink Josh himself.  “They say it’s better to give than to receive,” Robert wrote in a post that showed himself inking tattoo artist Josh.

“Brave man to allow all the [Avengers] the opportunity to ink,” said Jeremy in his own post.

“Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us. By the way, he’s got another one on him that Scarlett did, which is beautiful, which is crazy, because the line she drew on him, which was just supposed to be a straight line, looked like a lightning bolt. It was a mess,” Robert told Entertainment Weekly.

Joshua could barely contain his enthusiasm on his own Instagram post. “Oh man!!! I can finally post this!!! It’s revealed by the man himself! Avengers Assemble!!! Thank you all for the best time ever,” he said, posting a picture of himself with the 4 Avengers.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is among the biggest media franchises in history, and is based on well-loved characters from the Marvel Comics universe. It launched in 2008 with Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr.

Since then, over 19 movies have been released under the shared universe – 3 of them Avengers movies. The latest, Avengers: Infinity War, featured an ensemble cast of almost all Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes thus far (sans Jeremy’s Hawkeye).
